Collaboration with the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nursings Offers a Complimentary Course to Students
Chamberlain University is proud to announce that its Practice-Ready Specialty-Focused Nurse Education Model pilot project was awarded a $ 1.2 million grant from the American Nurses Foundation’s Reimagining Nursing Initiative (RN Initiative). This grant funds bold ideas and leadership by nurses to transform nursing to improve health access, care, and outcomes.
Chamberlain was among the few top nursing institutions to be awarded a grant. Chamberlain University is addressing the national shortage of nurses by offering first-year nurses clinical rotations in perioperative practice.
“We are honored our Practice-Ready, Specialty-Focused(TM) program was recognized by the American Nurses Foundation, and we want to thank them for their support, which will help Chamberlain further pave the way for the future healthcare workforce,” said Karen Cox, Ph.D., RN, FACHE, FAAN, president, Chamberlain University. “Nurses are in great demand now. This pilot program strengthens students’ generalist knowledge and exposes them to a specialty area. It prepares them to practice in various settings, such as perioperative care.
Chamberlain’s pilot program aims to show that nurses are more ready to enter their professions when they have (1) the chance to determine the best fit for their first area of practice and (2) get specialty-focused training and clinical experience.
This pilot program is being implemented at five Chamberlain campuses, with three clinical partners: Loyola Medicine in Chicago, Ochsner Health in New Orleans, and Emory Healthcare within the Atlanta metropolitan area. It’s being done in collaboration with the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, creators of evidence-based guidelines for perioperative nursing and education resources.
Students interested in the Chamberlain Bachelor of Science in Nursing program can enroll in an online didactic 16-week Introduction to Perioperative Nursing course at no extra cost. Students will be able to participate in an eight-week perioperative experience after completing the IPN course.
“With our focus on perioperative practice, we are delighted Chamberlain was awarded this grant for their Practice-Ready, Specialty-Focused(TM) pilot,” said AORN CEO/Executive Director Linda Groah, MSN, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, FAAN. We believe in Chamberlain’s pilot to provide a pathway for nursing students to practice perioperative care and then pursue a career in that field. This model provides a solution to the many recruitment problems that face all facilities that offer surgical services.
Chamberlain will follow the same model for home care during the pilot period. After the pilot ends in 2025, the program will be evaluated. Chamberlain will make a publicly accessible playbook that documents the model. This will allow other schools of nursing to copy the model.
American Nurses Foundation Executive Director Kate Judge says, “The Reimagining Nurse Initiative provides solid investments nurses require to transform the education regulation and practice nursing.” “Nurses can be a catalyst for the rapid evolution of our healthcare system, as they have a unique perspective on prevention, well-being and delivery of healthcare services.”
The Kaiser Permanente National Community Benefit Fund at East Bay Community Foundation (AMN Healthcare, Omnicell, and the Salka Impact Fund made the Reimagining Nursing Initiative possible.
