Dyson launches new range of vacuum cleaners and attachments for an all-round deep-clean

New de-tangling brush bar technology

Now available across Dyson’s latest range of vacuum cleaners, the new detangling brush bar technology is designed to tackle hair of every kind, whether it’s a shedding cat or a hairy partner. Inspired by a detangling comb, the brush bar features 56 hair removal vanes, angled to help migrate all hair types directly into the cleaner head.

These polycarbonate teeth, combined with a set of spiraling nylon bristles, anti-static carbon fiber filaments and strong suction power, work in tandem to capture and tackle troublesome tangles, as well as larger debris and microscopic dust.

To understand the problem at hand, Dyson engineers and microbiologists studied a variety of animals such as cats and dogs, while also including more unexpected animals – such as an alpaca, donkey, horse and rabbit. This provided the team with a detailed understanding of the size, texture and structure of hair across animal species and breeds, as well as the invisible allergens and bacteria they can introduce to the home.

“The impact pets have in the home goes beyond what we can see. Effectively removing pet hair is important but pet dander with dried-on saliva is a problem which is invisible to the naked eye,” said Monika Stuczen, Dyson’s research scientist in microbiology .

“These microscopic particles can carry allergy-causing proteins around the home. Lightweight and miniscule, they can remain airborne for hours or transfer between objects. Research has even found cat allergens in rooms where cats have never been.”

Groom tool reintroduced

Although pet hair can carry pollen and other allergens, research conducted by Dyson indicated that pet owners are likely unaware of the impacts their furry friends can have at home – and on the family. By investigating cleaning habits from around the world, Dyson found 50 percent of pet owners allow their pets to sleep on their beds; yet only 30 percent are aware that bacteria and dust mite faeces often reside on their puss or pooch, which can be a hidden cause of allergies.

In a bid to combat the issue, Dyson has reintroduced it’s grooming tool to the refreshed lineup. Now compatible with Dyson’s cordless range, it can be attached to the main body of the machine or via an extension hose. Designed to remove loose hairs, pet dander and microscopic skin flakes, the tool flexes as you brush your pet, reaching through the dog’s coat to grab loose hairs for quick and comfortable grooming.

The brand’s first self-cleaning dusting brush

The refreshed range also introduces the scratch-free dusting brush; the first self-cleaning dusting brush to be introduced by the brand.

While traditional dusting tools may use coarse bristles to agitate dirt, which can inadvertently scratch surfaces, the soft brush is equipped with ultrafine and densely packed Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) polymer filaments – a material inspired by fine paint and makeup brushes. The bristles are tapered to 0.05mm to avoid scratching, so if your home is full of delicate glass and wood surfaces, this could be a good bet.

The brush also features a rotating cuff to remove dust and debris from the bristles hygienically and easily.

Clean those awkward nooks and crannies

Anyone who has used a vacuum before will know how difficult it can be to get into those hard-to-reach areas, often involving contortions in the vein of Twister. Tools created specifically for crevices can be rigid, making them hard to use in tight, awkward spaces, while flexing tools can lose suction when bent, and clog easily from built-up debris.

To combat this, the new lineup has introduced an aptly named awkward gap tool that twists 22 degrees. According to Dyson, multiple prototypes tested at varying angles found that this is the optimum angle for cleaning hard-to-reach places around the home or car. With a width of 12.5mm and 254mm reach, it’s been engineered to reach and deep-clean narrow gaps. The attachment also offers a secondary brush at the tip to tackle more stubborn messes.

The two new attachments join Dyson’s suite of 12 vacuum cleaner accessories.

A new-and-improved vacuum

Additionally, the Dyson V8TM vacuum has been given a makeover. Initially launched in 2016, the Dyson V8TM vacuum was designed to deliver cord-free, hassle-free cleaning for up to 40 minutes. It’s now been upgraded with detangling technology, including the new Motorbar cleaner head and detangling hair screw tool.

To trap invisible particles such as pet dander and allergens, filtration has been improved from 99.97 percent to 99.99 percent efficiency at 0.3 microns, in line with the latest V15TM models, Dyson said.

What else is out there?

If Dyson doesn’t quite tick your boxes, the Samsung Bespoke Jet Elite Extra Stick Vacuum is a good bet, but for an eye-watering price. The Samsung Bespoke Jet features an aesthetic clean station, Jet Cyclone technology, an ergonomic telescopic wand, dual floor brushes, a power mop and handy tools to deliver optimum cleaning performance – for around $1599. It also offers up to 120 minutes of run time, letting you clean more areas in one go.

Alternatively, the Dyson V8 and a selection of tools is available from $849.
