Ypsilanti Schools wants more Space for International Baccalaureate Programs.
Published
4 months agoon

YPSILANTI, MI – Christina Oliver chose for her son’s education to go to Ypsilanti International School with the intention that he would be able to stay on the International Baccalaureate track through middle school.
This plan is at risk because there is a surge in demand for Ypsilanti Community Schools’ International Baccalaureate programs has exceeded the available space for students at Washtenaw International Middle Academy (WIMA).
“I don’t want to have to school shop, but I’m telling you I’m going to if my child does not get to go to WIMA or continue the IB track through middle school,” Oliver said. Oliver, whose son is in the third grade.
Ypsilanti Schools opened Ypsilanti International Elementary School as an International Baccalaureate school for preschool through second grade during the school year 2016-17, and then it was expanded to include the third and fifth grades this year.
Families were attracted by the rigorous curriculum that placed the focus on global citizenship, as well as the fact that registering at YIES will assure their children a place in Washtenaw International Middle Academy, an IB school for students in the sixth to eighth grades.
However, YES has grown to such a degree that there isn’t enough space to hold the students in third grade – which includes Oliver’s son in the event that they all decide to attend WIMA at the time they enter sixth grade.
The district is at a crossroads in the school year 2021-22 and beyond.
“If we don’t think about what we’re going to do now, we’re going to have a community problem on our hands,” said Superintendent Benjamin Edmondson during a board of education session about the future of the Ypsilanti’s IB programs on April 17, Tuesday.
WIMA is able to accommodate 64 new sixth graders to join the school every year. YES have 69 in third grade and 70 in second grade.
If YES students take up all seats at WIMA, there is no room for students of different Ypsilanti elementary schools that might wish to attend WIMA and Schools of Choice students who reside outside of the district but would like to move to WIMA.
Celeste Hawkins, vice president of the school board, stated that it was not the policy of the school board to ensure that YES students were admitted to WIMA; however, district officials advertised the possibility that there would be seats available at WIMA for families who were considering the new IB elementary school.
The board has not decided whether or not it will ensure YIES students a spot in WIMA. Meanwhile, the district’s leaders are looking at options to add to IB. IB programs.
Edmondson stated that he expects twenty per cent of YCS students to enrol on an IB program during the school year 2021-22.
To increase the number of middle-school IB seats to meet rising demand, he recommended the gradual expansion of YIES to the preschool to eighth-grade class.
The additional classroom space could result in relocating the preschool to eighth-grade classes to the existing Ypsilanti Community Middle School, which will be empty beginning in the school year 2021-22 or adding classrooms to the existing YES building on 503 Oak Street, Ypsilanti, the installation of the portable classes at YIES or constructing an entirely new school.
Some of those options will need district citizens to vote on an investment fund that could result in more property tax revenue for the district, Edmondson said.
Members of the Board, Meredith Schindler and Maria Sheler-Edwards, have resisted the idea of establishing the preschool-to-8th-grade program and even the relocation of YIES to the present YCMS building.
Schindler noted that the district plans to move sixth and eighth graders from the Estabrook Learning Community in the school year 2021-22 since combining the middle and elementary school levels into one school was not proven to be effective.
Sheler-Edwards was concerned about the possibility of causing instability to YIES through the relocation of the program.
“The school’s thriving. It hasn’t even finished its second year. … I think the best thing you could do to destabilize a program is to start messing around with your configuration and your location,” she added.
The trustees have generally have expressed their support for broadening the district’s IB offerings to include a sixth-through-eight-grade curriculum. However, they would like to have more time to consult with parents and look at alternatives.
Another alternative Edmondson suggested is to move WIMA from the location in which it shares with Washtenaw International High School to a new space in which the middle school could be able to accommodate more students, but the idea did not gain much support during the board’s discussion.
Washtenaw International Middle Academy and Washtenaw International High School (WIHI) currently have a common building. However, both are located within Ypsilanti Schools, and the international high school is under the control of the Washtenaw Educational Options Consortium.
Beginning in the 2021-22 school year, each3 school will be operated under the Washtenaw Educational Options Consortium, which is a partnership of Washtenaw County’s conventional public school districts as well as intermediate school districts. As the WEOC school, Washtenaw International Middle Academy will remain a school that enrols only Ypsilanti students.
Sheler-Edwards has also suggested the installation of mobile classrooms in WIMA as a method to expand classroom space without the need to create an additional middle school IB program. Another idea suggested by Schindler could be to develop an elementary school’s International Baccalaureate program within Ypsilanti Community Middle School.
Five parents who addressed the school board each expressed similar concerns regarding wanting to see equality within the school district with regards to how students can access the IB programs and also ensuring that there are other options of high quality beyond the International Baccalaureate.

Retirement program
When a postal worker retires, he or she is eligible for a number of benefits offered by the Postal Service. Benefits include retirement pay, disability coverage, and optional health insurance. There are three major types of benefits available: Federal Employment Retirement System (FERS), the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). The benefits of each plan are based on the employee’s age, years of service, and salary.
CSRS provides benefits to an employee based on his or her highest salary in three consecutive years of service. In addition, CSRS/CSRS Offset employees are eligible for an additional service credit. FERS, the Federal Employees Retirement System, pays less than CSRS.
The benefits offered by both systems are dependent on the employment history of the postal worker. Career employees receive competitive salaries, regular salary increases, and overtime pay. They may also receive a night shift differential.
The Postal Service offers generous annual leave. For employees with at least fifteen years of service, they receive 26 days of leave. Those with less than fifteen years of service receive twenty days of leave. All employees are eligible for a minimum of four hours of paid sick time.
USPS employees are enrolled in FERS, the Federal Employees Retirement System, which is similar to a 401(k) plan offered by private companies. Letter carriers have the right to receive individual retirement counseling on the clock.
A letter carrier is also eligible for the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program, which offers excellent coverage at a reasonable cost. This program is available to most non-bargaining unit workers.
The Postal Service Health Benefits Program will replace the FEHB Program starting in 2025. This program provides health insurance to post office retirees and new postal employees.
